Consortium for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) When completed this international project spanning earth and social science databases will truly be the mother of all datasets. While many of the most complex databases are still being linked, a series of Thematic Guides are in provisional form and could make excellent teaching tools. For example, under the heading of Human Health and Potential Increases in Mortality due to Global Warming there is an article entitled "Models Tha t Predict Potential Increases in Mortality due to Global Warming". This article reviews statistical issues relevant to modeling warming, and is linked to a chapter from an EPA report address ing climate effects on health that presents a statistical model, and includes a graphic depiction of model results. These guides are hyper-linked to figures and other texts as much as possible.

Environmental Protection Agency
The Hazardous Waste Information page reports on Hazardous waste existence and disposal. This includes The National Analysis document of the biennial report, " a detailed look at waste handling practices in the EPA regions, the states and at the largest facilities in the nation, including quantities of generation, management, shipments and receipts, and interstate imports and exports, as well as counts of generators and managers". This document (na.wp) includes many valuable (and understandable) tables. The number 1 state for generating waste is not New Jersey (it is ranked fourth behind....?). Good discussion of data as well. The report notes 97% of waste in NJ is from a single source. This is a large document in Word-Perfect format for IBM clones. Our PowerMac 8100 translated it slowly but effectively into MS-Word.

The Treatment, Storage and Disposal Facilities information includes seperate data sets listing the names and addresses of hazardous waste sites as well as longitude and latitude of the sites. This information can be combined to map the location of the hazardous waste sites in the U.S.

The Climate Data Sources is a good source for data concerning weather and climate.
